How to convince your boss to send you to a UX conference

Getting a "yes" from your manager for a conference ticket isn't always a quick conversation. Even when you know it's worth it, you still have to make the case: budget, time off, ROI, the whole thing.

We've been on the other side of those conversations a lot, and we've heard from plenty of attendees what actually works (and what doesn't). So we put together a little "How to Convince Your Boss" kit specifically for uxcon vienna – to take some of the awkward off your plate.

A bit of prep goes a long way

In general, it really helps to walk into the conversation with the basics already lined up. Things like:

  • What is the conference about? Topic focus, format, who it's for.
  • What are the actual costs? Ticket, travel, accommodation if needed, and any potential extras.
  • What's already included in the ticket? For example: full catering across all conference days, networking events, recordings, etc. – this often closes the gap between "looks expensive" and "actually pretty fair value".

A clear breakdown sometimes already takes some of the resistance out of the conversation. :-)

What's in the kit

  • Talking points on what you (and your team) will actually take home
  • A breakdown of the program and why it's relevant for different roles
  • Concrete arguments around ROI, networking, and continued learning
  • A small (and we mean small) selection of companies that have attended in past years.

You can grab the pdf here.

If you need more details, like numbers from past editions, a breakdown of attendee roles, industries, or seniority levels, just let us know!

Happy to send more, in whatever format helps you build your case.
